What does this while bar mean?

That is the activities button of the GNOME desktop.

The white bar shows which virtual desktop you are currently looking at
-- dots to the left or right indicate inactive virtual desktops. So,
right now, you have 1 more on the right which is not in use.

This is nothing whatsoever to do with Firefox.

If you are not happy with the snap for some reason you can just
install it directly from Mozilla.

And if you find the GNOME desktop hard to navigate, then why not use
another one? I favour Ubuntu Unity but Xubuntu is also excellent.
