Probably a question of keyboard mapping

Hello.

For the past unknown many months, the keyboard character 'r', when 
pushed, will often sabotage what I do, by killing it and sometimes 
shifts the location of the text that I input, mid sentence.

How do I find what is happening when I push the key?

It is silly that I have to attempt to avoid using the key due to this.
