In running Linux Mint Mate, I have two file managers - the first one, is
the default Mate file manager, caja.

However, I have had difficulties with caja, so, I installed, and,
primarily use, pcmanfm.

However, pcmanfm does not allow me to (or, I have not been able to)
access files stored on my cellphone, or, to interact with the
cellphone's file storage, but, caja is good for that, both allowing me
to retrieve files stored on my cellphone, and, to copy files to my
cellphone (such as downloaded ringtones).

The same applies, from memory, to accessing image files on digital cameras.

So, basically, I recommend pcmanfm, for day to day file management, and,
caja (a Mate system utility), for file management involving external
special storage devices such as cellphones and digital cameras.

For accessing external storage devices, such as external SSD's and
external HDD's and external USB thumbdrives, pcmanfm is fine - it is
just with the special external devices (also connected via USB), that
pcmanfm is not so good and caja is better.

That is my experience, anyway.
