I'm fairly confident that it's to reduce any support burden. Bugs filed  
against a snap (because of a transitional package with the same name) are  
closed with a "thanks, but it's not our stuff, go to the Snap store for  
support" boilerplate.

The bright future is where everything is a snap: Firefox, Thunderbird,  
LibreOffice, etc. and no resources need to be allocated to support them.
