Cannot access Xubuntu menu

I've gotten my self into a real mess. I have firefox displayed not quite
full screen and I just see the top of the Xubuntu whisper menu but I cannot
select it and I cannot move firefox by pressing the alt key and pressing
the right mouse button. I can bring up a terminal but I cannot enter any
text.

One other thing, firefox is partly obscured by an annoying Microsoft window
telling me that Skype is no longer available and I cannot move that either.
I can select a firefox tab but it's mostly obscured by the Microsoft
message.

I can boot into ubuntu rescue mode but I'm not sure what to do next and I
don't want to get into a greater mess.

I really need to get Xubuntu going again.
