If I'm reading you correctly and you're back at a black screen after
all of that, there are two Grub2 boot-options that should take care
of the black screen by preventing the Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) from
taking control of the display during boot. You can use one or
both of them depending on which kind of graphics card you have. The
nomodeset boot option disables KMS for every GPU detected. The
nouveau.modeset=0: boot option disables KMS for NVIDIA graphics cards.
To temporarily change the Grub2 boot option for the current boot only:
1. Boot your computer (possibly by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del if you're at the black screen).
2. Press the Shift key as soon as you start booting to get the Grub menu to open after your BIOS or UEFI splash screen is displayed or wait for the Grub menu to open on its own if it normally does.
3. Edit the first entry in the Grub menu (the plain Ubuntu entry) by pressing E while it's selected.
4. Move the cursor down to the vmlinuz line.
5. Find the line that contains "quiet splash".
6. Pick one:
* Replace "quiet splash" with "quiet splash nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0" if you have an NVIDIA graphics card.
* Replace "quiet splash" with "quiet splash nomodeset" if you have any other kind of graphics card.
7. Press F10 to save the change and boot.
To permanently change the Grub2 boot option:
1. Once you've successfully booted your computer, open a terminal window.
2. Use the sudo nano /etc/default/grub command to edit Grub.
3. Move the cursor down to the line that contains "quiet splash".
4. Pick one:
* Replace "quiet splash" with "quiet splash nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0" if you have an NVIDIA graphics card.
* Replace "quiet splash" with "quiet splash nomodeset" if you have any other kind of graphics card.
5. Press the Ctrl+o key-combination to save the change (not that's the letter o and not a zero).
6. Press the Enter key to accept the filename.
7. Press the Ctrl+x key combination to exit.
