Are clouds an acceptable alternative to your own hard drives? - Any links to good hardware forums or pointers to external HDD enclosures with controllers that never go stand by?

Hello, Ralf.

Without knowing the details of your circumstances and your needs, I am
wondering why you do not simply get something like the Samsung external
USB SSD's

They go up in capacity to ( believe it is the biggest capacity) 4TiB
nominal, 3.64TiB usable, are sufficiently fast, use exFAT (for which,
Ubuntu has native drivers since about v12.04, from memory), which is
quite efficient, and, they consume relatively little space.
