I would like to suggest: AIMS (www.aims.ac.za) could possibly offer a
venue for a great Software Freedom Day event. I am not at liberty to
offer this at no cost, but if I drum up some support first, we can
start talking details, and I can ask AIMS to perhaps sponsor the venue
itself; we could look for funding for other costs (flying some speakers
here, food, etc). It is a great venue too (near the beach).
We could include promotion of Canonical, Ubuntu, with talks on What is
FOSS, its role in African education, government and business. Tuxlabs
could be demo'd. High profile speakers? Mark Shuttleworth? We might be
able to invite ministers (of education, scitech, etc. these have spoken
at AIMS events before? But let's aims lower at first :) We can perhaps
have ubuntu installations not only demo'd but practiced by 50 people,
or maybe just used on our computers. (Nice large screens and fair
internet). We have some contacts with SAAO, clug, etc. All those could
get involved.
I don't want to compete with other events in Cape Town though...
so I'm reading the wiki now. I will need some others to help organize
it if we want it to be a super event. I see the Cape Town team shows no
plans except Jonathan Carter as a contact and two other team members. Do
you have plans yet? Before I start adding to the wiki I thought I'd post
here for some discussion.

[ On 1 September 50 new postgraduate students arrive at AIMS. They are
from all over Africa, and again, potentially will spread Ubuntu to
20 or 30 African Universities. We can invite schools, university
students, or entrepreneurs around Cape Town. ]
