While there have been problems with SATA at times, it is not true to say
"there is a problem with modern SATA drives" in general. The last time I
heard a complaint about SATA was 18 months ago.

In fact, as of 7.04, Ubuntu uses the same driver subsystem for SATA and
PATA (IDE).

My laptop and desktop both use SATA - the desktop SATA II. No problems
whatsoever.

The Dell models now available with Ubuntu preloaded have SATA drives:

These are not necessary. The Ubuntu installer resizes NTFS safely.
