I'd prefer a web guide to a book: it's often more up-to-date, and you 
have search functionality.

Most things should be fairly self-explanatory. If you want to dig 
deeper, and mess around using the terminal (command line) instead of the 
GUI, start here:

Be warned that this is a bit like free climbing. Great fun and very 
instructive, but there are times when a single slip can cause a whole 
lotta broken bones. Work carefully, especially when you're issuing 
commands as root (sudo).
