I don't really see the point. It would have been better to do something
like this as part of Software Freedom Day, instead of devoting an entire
seperate day to this event. What would you actually do on a document
freedom day? Give talks about open standards? Hand out discs with
OpenOffice.org? Not really too far from what people are doing on SFD.
They also seem to be more focussed on the Open Document Format than open
document formats specifically, no mention of W3c or concepts such as web
documents. They seem to believe that an open standard can only be an
open standard if it's recognised by the ISO, which I don't particularly
agree with.

Not that I mean to be harsh, but I really can't see why they couldn't
make this a part of SFD instead. I think if anyone would take this up
and spread awareness, it would be good. However, I do think that
document formats alone is something that will create very little
interest in the public and it will be difficult to maintain the same
kind of momentum that SFD, for example, have managed to build up.
