[ubuntu-za] [Proposal] Ubuntu-ZA participation: monthly themes

   KidsOpenICDL - OpenIcdl for kids, ie, PenPal letters, TuxTyping,
TuxPaint, etc, 
   KidsUbuntu - Getting Kids familiar with Ubuntu/Edubuntu
   
Documentation, for schools to be able to use Edubuntu/Ubuntu, I don't
mean docs for the program, but docs that teachers use to be able to
teach using Edubuntu/Ubuntu, for pre-school, Jnior school and High
school.

This is where we need to get more Teachers involved, as they will know
what is required for their class, as well as us more technical people,
to show the teachers what is possible.

We actually nee something like the ubuntu-za lists, possibly an
ubuntu-za-edu list, which is not too technical for teachers to be able
to understand, and to give input.

Also an ubuntu-za education programmers list, for programmers that are
willing to spend some time programming the programmes that are require
for the teachers to teach with.

Things like TuxReader ( http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/tuxread/ )
as it is stagnant.

I know that there are some programs that are already written, but will
our teachers use them, we need kids programs that our teachers are happy
to use, and they won't need to learn something drastically new to teach
what they are already teaching without a computer.

The problem is finding teachers that are willing to help after hours, as
most of them don't have time, and also programmers that also don't have
too much time.

Hope some people give this some thought and either add to this, or
improve this.

This could possibly fall under education: --> Youth Involvement with
Ubuntu. Creating an environment for young people who are interested in
computers to explore and experience Ubuntu.

This could involve making a list of resources for young people who want
to explore the world of IT.

Finding a way to create forums for young people, or deliberately making
existing forums friendly to young people. (A youth page on the wiki?).

Encourage investment in youth development: eg. On software freedom day
we could offer sponsorship for two or three young people (School
leavers) to complete an LPI course, with a possible internship or job
offer at the end.  (Alternatively identifying young people who have
already excelled in the open source environment and sponsoring them to
attend one of the international Ubuntu conferences).

A further area of interest that affect Education and Industry 
Are there any service providers that provide LPI (or alternative)
training that is recognised by SETA (Sector education and Training
Authorities). 

If not, could we find a way to register the LPI (or equivalent)
qualification with SAQA and find service providers that could offer this
training?)

How could we promote such training to the industry.

This might be out of the scope of this forum... and it might already be
an option.
