You'd want a different IP range for each different card in your desktop
machine. If they're the same, you would probably not be able to route to
one of the networks (which will explain why you couldn't ping your
laptop). So if your home network is on 10.0.0.0, try making your
laptop's address something like 192.168.0.10 and the ethernet card on
your desktop that connects to the laptop 192.168.0.11. You should then
be able to ping your laptop from the desktop, and the desktop from the
laptop. You should also be able to ping the rest of your hosts from your
desktop. When that works, then you can set up the routing as they
describe in that howto.
