A complete stab in the dark here, but perhaps Firestarter isn't NetworkManager aware and that somehow 
something it checks somewhere is making it think what it is? In between when you guys can figure it out and 
not, could I possibly suggest checking out Firehol[1]? Short of having no graphical interface, I found it 
extremely easy to use, and also handles having more than two network interfaces/zones correctly (whereas 
Firestarter is only really well-suited for 2 interfaces).
