Update: Just tried disabling Compiz and suspending but no change - screen is
still black on resume. After a click of the mouse, the screen then lights up
with grey background, with the mouse pointer visible and active but nothing
else. Have to force reboot.

Reboot after disabling compiz. How did u go about disabling it?

I disabled it through visual effects - set the radio button to "none". All
effects ceased to work after that so Im guessing it turned Compiz off.

When I do manage to get back to the desktop, Ethernet doesnt not work, sound
does not work, cant mount/unmount internal drives - fails with input/output
error.
If i say reboot, it crashes into shell with:

"end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 211234864"

and then freezes. Have to force reboot again. This is leading me to think
that my hard drives are not being woken up correctly.
