Ye I never really found the need for this feature if I need to go to
low battery state for moving my laptop I generally suspend and if it
getting powered down it is getting powered down. (I don't have an
issue restarting my apps most of them seem to save their own internal
state pretty well)
also I can't say I have really heard of people hibernating their desktop pc's

64bit bit Nvidia could also be an issue. Some of the 64bit drivers
seem to lag a bit behind the 32bit counter parts or at least they tend
to have more bugs.
Something else to make sure is if you intend of using hibernation you
need to have the same if not more swap space as your ram. see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq (This would be my first
suggestion to check).
