Don't apologise for not knowing if you don't ask you will never learn
see [1].
You can alway try to get into a console by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 this
will how ever take you to a completely text based terminal with no
GUI. If you can get to a console then your system isn't frozen but
rather your GUI. Once at the terminal you can try restarting your
Desktop Enviroment by typing "sudo inovoke-rc.d gdm restart" this
will restart gnome and you will loose any open applications but might
help to ping point the issue.
Some thing else you could look at is the log files in /var/log/ syslog
and dmesg might also want to check kernel You can view the last 100
lines by doing
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/syslog | less the piping into into less
will allow you to scroll up and down. replace the log location with
which ever log you want to view.
Something you could defiantly look at after rebooting your machine is
in gnome there is a graphical logviewer under System -> Administration
-> Log viewer. Generally most people would look for things that
contain error fail warning or any thing that just doesn't seem right.
If you notice any specific error messages put them into the big google
and see if any thing comes up if not post them to the list and some
one might actually understand them :)
