This will work for most operating systems.

1) Ping the broadcast IP address.

Linux - "ping 192.168.1.255 -b"
Windows - "ping 192.168.1.255"

2) Look at the arp table.

All OSs I have seen - "arp -a"

This will only work for IP addresses in your subnet.
