[ubuntu-za] CUPS Scheduler not running

Dear All,
The printer in our lab keeps "disappearing".
Usually when +/- 32 learners print their work, not all at the same time, but it
could be that 2 learners hit the print button at the same time which might
cause the problem.
We have tried:
sudo -s
/etc/init.d/cups start
in the terminal, but all that happens is that the last printed document comes
out. When I try to check the printer default setting the following error
message appears.
"CUPS scheduler not running"
Can anyone suggest what's going wrong and how we can get it right?
