df -h should show you a list of all your *mounted* partitions and
their sizes and available space.

You can check in your /etc/fstab file to see if /boot is listed there
-- somewhere at the back of my mind is a memory about /boot not being
mounted by default.

iirc, yes -- there should be a "Rescue a broken system" option.

If /boot is a separate partition and is full, you should be able to
remove some old kernels and initrd files that you don't use any more
from it. Don't forget you may need to mount /boot once you're in the
rescue shell, I don't think it mounts all your partitions by default.
Identifying the old kernels/initrds should be straightforward, as they
all have version numbers in the filenames.
