I have the same graphics card and had the same issue. The problem is
that this graphics card is on the blacklist of Compiz, in other words
Compiz won't allow you to enable it. There is some "freeze" bug that
they are waiting to get resolved before taking it of the blacklist:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/67975
http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist
I got around it, by removing the "blacklist entry" on my machine, but
created new problems for myself. In fact I now have two new problems:
1. The windows manager doesn't load when my machine boots up! This is
seriously annoying! I have to restart it before opening any programs.
If anybody has advice, please let me know.
2. My computer intermittently freeze when I try to get out of the screen
saver. Still no fix for this either.
My advice, accept that your screen card has issues with Compiz. If you
really still want to try it (at the risk of getting the same problems),
here's what I did...
1) Type in the terminal: "sudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz"
2) Search in the file the lines about the blacklist. There should be a
pair of lines with your (i.e. intel) graphic card. Uncomment them
(meaning: put a '#' at the beginning of the line).
3) Save the file.
4) Restart the system
Before that, I also tried the following on the command line:
1) gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false
2) compiz --replace
but because of the blacklist it didn't work! But this might be part of
my problems.
Just in case you get the same problems, I suggest you install "Compiz
Fusion Icon" through Synaptic and add an entry for it in System ->
Preferences -> Startup Applications. The command for the startup entry
is "fusion-icon --no-start".
If you restart your system and you open a program and you see that it
does not have a title bar or close button on the top, your windows
manager has gone haywire. All you do is right-click on Compiz Fusion Icon
on the panel (top right) and select "Reload window manager".
I don't have a permanent fix yet.
