Thanks. I have had a look at these, which are similar to info I have
been using. You may like to have a look at:

This is not specific to gentoo.

I have been using card 17, which gives me the correct description for my
card in dmesg, but though I have tried every one of the tuner numbers in
the list, both PAL & NTSC, I still get nothing but my famous error
message "tuner-simple 0-004b: i2c i/o error: rc ==-5 (should be 4)".

Clutching at straws, I tried MeTV, TVtime, XawTV and even kdetv with all
the different combinations.

Incidentaly, the card works fine with composite video input, so the
problem is only with the tuner.
