[ubuntu-za] Bluetooth modem from my Karmic Wind U100

I have followed the howto at www.teaparty.net/technotes/blue-gprs.html in an 
attempt to get my netbook running Karmic to use my Palm Treo 680 as a modem 
but when I attempt to dial I get the following:-

sudo wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Host is down
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Host is down
--> Cannot open /dev/rfcomm0: Host is down

Suggestions on how to repair this please.
