Hi Charl, 

Not sure if this does what you want it to, but if you right-click the
junk folder, there is a tick-option to "mark message as read". It is
possible that deselecting this option will do the trick.

I'm still using 9.04 with Evolution 2.26.1.  So that's another incentive
to upgrade, I guess
