[ubuntu-za] Permission denied in subfolders

On my laptop running Ubuntu 10.4 & Apache 2 & PHP Version 
5.3.2-1ubuntu4.2 I am getting a problem as follows:-

All my projects work fine as long as they are in /var/www but as soon as 
I attempt keeping them in their own folders under /var/www they fail.
As an example if I move a project/application from /var/www to 
/var/www/NewFolder and browse to localhost/NewFolder I get :-
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /NewFolder on this server 
<http://www.apache.com/forums/troubleshooting/permission-denied-in-subfolders/#>.


but if I leave it in /var/www/ it works fine. I initially suspected 
file/folder permissions but tried a number of setting all of which 
failed. I no suspect that this is anApache setting that is wrong, but 
what/which?
Please tell me how to fix this.
