Hi All
Thanks to everyone who has replied to my questions. I have collated all
the replies I got externally and reply below.....
*1) How do I make the equivalent of a "Bat File" to launch a
'script' to start a program?*
*
Thanks Raoul and Lee – that sorted it out for me... I will give it
a try!
*2) The above is to run Synergy but I find that my Linux Box
changes it's IP address from time-to-time. How can I stop this? *
*
Thanks again Raoul & Lee – I guess the Sys Admin would be me on my
home Network!! I will look into the file you mention Raoul.
*3) Often when I try to open a file I get a box asking me to
select the program to use to do this. Fine - but it only shows me
Files to select and not Programs. How do I select a specific
program in this box? *
*
This only happens sometimes and I can’t seem to reproduce the
problem right now!! Next time it happens I will take a Screen
Image and re-submit it.
*4) When I first installed 8.04 last year my sound worked fine.
When I upgraded, (full re-install), to 8.10 I had no sound. I
waited for 10.04 but still no sound. I have tried to fix this with
no success and think I will wait for 10.10 but any ideas on this? *
*
Thanks Raoul, Hilton & Lee – There has been no change to my system
since 8.10 and that worked!! My Video card is a Nvidea . Regarding
Googling for help I did this and got hold of a Guy who had written
about this problem. I tried his ‘solution’ with no results and
then contacted him directly. We did several changes and tests over
some period of time after which he told me my system was
“messed-up” and I would have to re-install. I pointed out that it
WAS a new fresh install and he did not reply!!
*5) I have two IDE drives in my box. 1st one for the OpSys and the
2nd is 'Home' Do I need to set-up a separate "Data' folder to hold
my docs, pics etc? I ask this because I'm not sure if a re-install
of a new version will completely overwrite the 'Home' folder. If
so how do I do this? *
*
Thanks Raoul & Josh – So you are telling me that I can keep all my
data that is under ‘Home’ on my second drive and when I Install
the next version I can just say don’t format /home? Thats easy.
Thanks..
*6) I also have a 3rd SATA drive in my Box and when I upgraded
from 9.10 to 10.04 I moved a lot of old stuff onto this drive. To
"protect" it I disconnected it while I installed 10.04. Now If I
try to plug it in again the system will not start! Any suggestions? *
*
Thanks Raoul, Josh and Frans. When the Box was running with 9.10
the SATA drive was working fine as I was able to move stuff to it.
I Installed 10.04 with this drive un-plugged. Now if I try and
plug ot in the system no longer boots. Don’t think it’s a
‘Master-Slave’ problem. I will check Boot Order on the BIOS.
*7) I'm a KDE user and have been hearing good things about the new
Mint Linux KDE Version and would like to try it out on a spare
machine I have here. Does anyone have the ISO of this who could
make me a DVD as my bandwidth restrictions make it impossible for
me to download!!? (I live in Pretoria.)*
*
I’ve had some help with this – Thanks to those who offered who I
have contacted directly..
Thanks a lot - a GREAT help!!!
Ian Whitfield.
