Yay! So those little pieces of tech lint that clutters my memory helped
someone. I am happy it's working. There's nothing like rescueing orphan pc's
with free software.

Ah! Yeaj! Thanks, that did it. Now I can try to install Ubuntu on the
original harddrive!
To get into the system (since it did not want to boot:
1. booted from the (alternative) install cd and selected:
"rescue a broken system"
2. Ran a shell on the root file system on the harddrive
The reason is that the default Xubuntu install hides the grub menu so
you can't select the recoverly console.
To set acpi=off:
1. Edit the file "/etc/default/grub" and set:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=off"
2. ran "update-grub"
The reason for this is that this insures that acpi=off is always set
when update-grub is run, e.g. when a new kernel is downloaded and
installed. Editing /boot/grub/grub.conf will be reset when update-grub
is run.
