It seems I spoke to soon. The noacpi option sorted everything out for
Xubuntu, but I prefer to use Ubuntu if I could unless the performance
is really bad. The noacpi option allowed the Ubuntu installation to
be completed with now slowing down to a crawl as before... yay!
However, once I boot Ubuntu I get the same result as before. So the
screen card is worth investigating:
nVidia NV18 Geforce4 MX4000
>From Google its clear that this one often the cause of problems. But
I couldn't find clear instructions on how to install the driver for it
in 10.04. I could find instructions for previous releases of Ubuntu
that refer to packages and programs that don't exist in 10.04 (e.g. Envy)
or instructions that are way too cryptic.
I'm hoping you know of something more useful.
