I tried dpkg-reconfigure - it did what I expected it would,
which was to back up my xorg.conf and try with no config file.

I had tried that myself before. It gives me VESA graphics.

This is a work box, and it is somewhat embarassing because it worked
fine until I did my lucid upgrade, and now I am stuck with VESA.

It has an onboard Intel card as well, but then I need an adaptor
to convert from the computer's VGA to the screen's DVI.

That is the route I will go if I can't get matrox drivers. I don't
need fancy graphics - I just need more than 640x480.

Cheers, Andy!
