Sometimes the obvious solutions are the right ones. I was looking for 
some arcane bug in nautilus. Found a couple of weird things happening on 
my system, but none of them actually important enough to freeze the 
desktop. So I guess I contributed a bit to paper-cut # 1000 001.

The one brain cell which used to be in my head is now about to enter 
retirement. At least I didn't rebuild my box and find out I hadn't 
plugged the damn thing in. Time to check out the Alzheimers medication.
