Grub 2 will only be used if it is a fresh install as far as i know. If you
perform an upgrade from a previous distro grub will *not* be updated to grub
2. at least thats what it states on the ubuntu website last time i checked.
I had the same problem once a long time again and i just booted a live cd
and mounted my drive and fixed it as suggested by David.
