Run sudo testdisk /dev/<your disk>. As soon as you're in testdisk select
the disk and press <enter> to proceed. It should be on [Intel] so press
<enter> again. Select [Analyze] and press <enter>, select [Quick Search]
and press <enter>, if it asks if your partition was created under Vista
say 'N'. If it takes more than a few seconds stop the search and select
the partition that your data is on. Press <p> to list the files and <c>
to copy them. You'll be asked for a location to store the files.
Navigate to the folder where you want the recovered files stored and
press <y>.
The same procedure works for undeleting/listing files in if you select
[Advanced] instead of [Analyse]. Follow the steps from "and press <c> to
copy them" above.
On that link I gave you you'll see a link to GNU Ddrescue. Try not to
use dd.
