Hi Robin

I believe it is because those bits are proprietary software and not open source, You have a choice to install it or not

Ye there are many technical ways to make these offline repo's work iin
an easy to use manner.

Hi,

I am relatively new to Ubuntu, so please excuse my ignorance, which is probably about to become most apparent.

Why does the Ubuntu installation image not automatically install the necessary bits for playing DVDs, MP3s and the like? These are probably a couple of the most commonly used features on modern home (& possibly work) computers, and yet they are not part of the basic installation. I completely fail to see how this encourages the general public to use Ubuntu.

Robin
