People file for software patents because the patent office doesn't
inspect patent applications and will happily take your money for
anything you want to patent. However, nobody has ever tried to sue
anyone for software patent infringement in South Africa, and our law
makes it quite clear that patents don't cover computer programs.

Thanks for reminding me, I've been meaning to try and get a lawyer with
knowledge of these areas to give a talk at CLUG.
