I agree Raoul, that is the biggest advantage.
But forums have functionality where you get an email whenever a new thread
is made, or when there is a reply to a thread that you're subscribing to. I
think you should be able to subscribe to specific topics in a forum as well.
If you (hypothetically speaking) care only for the cake that gets eaten at
the release parties, and you only want to always discuss said cakes and how
they should taste etc, then you can subscribe to the 'release party cakes'
topic, and never receive any emails that does not have to do with delicious
cake ever again. :-)
