I've upgraded my machine through a few years' versions, and I can't
remember ever having broken package problems. The only problems I ever
had were ones I created myself!

It's a pity you think so, because my experience has been the exact opposite.
I went full time into Linux because my Windows desktop just wasn't
working properly, and so I started booting into Linux more and mor.
Eventually, after I realised that I hadn't booted into Windows fore more
than 6 months, I got rid of it. Now, I make my living using Linux as my
desktop/workhorse operating system. There are occasional bugs in some
programs, but my base system is solid.
I don't have time to "play with [my] computers" - I need mine to work,
and to work NOW. And that's what I have with Linux.
