Jan,

I'm real sorry to hear you've been having problems with linux.
It seems like you're losing hope :-(

Sorry if my/our explanations seemed too technical or complicated, I
would regret having added to the perception that linux was exclusively
aimed at hackers and tweakers and the like; although, being open
source and free it does lend itself to being hacked and tweaked - more
so than other systems - so it tends to attract the sort.

Sometimes one particular problem may make the whole thing seem buggy,
or too complex and ultimately hopeless,
but it's really only a single problem, usually with one isolated piece
of software...

As in your case, you only seem to be having trouble with migrating
your Thunderbird emails.
Notice that if you were to migrate it between two windows or mac
computers, you would have been having the same problem...
so you see, it's really not a linux issue.

I really hope you get your mail sorted out. I remember having these
kinds of problems, semi-annually (usually when upgrading hardware or
OS, or moving to new PC) - which is why I exclusively use web-based
mail nowadays (gmail & my company zimbra-based web-mail) - but I
realize that's not an option for everyone.

Canonical have worked a lot on Ubuntu's upgrade & installation process
to make it simple and hassle-free, if you haven't tried it recently, I
really do recommend it.

Where do you live? Perhaps one of us can come help you out?
