My first thought, is that your on-board sound is poked. Unless you can test it.

As far as I can tell from the Intel site, that's a AC 97 sound
chipset. Those were notoriously troublesome on *nixes back then, and I
don't doubt now too. I suggest you:

1) search ubuntuforums.org for solutions

2) post your own thread if you can't find a solution, or

3) use an alternative sound card.

PCI sound cards are pretty affordable. Check the supported list first
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsSoundCards.

I use a USB sound adapter with headphones
(http://www.magicbox.co.za/shop/product.asp?id=570). Just remember
that if you get a PCI sound card, to enter the PC BIOS and disable the
on-board sound (if relevant).

Sound like you need to enable drivers specific to your card. You do
this via the main menu System -> Admin -> Additional/Hardware Drivers.

When I had a 5500, the driver wizard did not detect it, it was a
manual install. Try this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=33142. But try the driver
wizard first.
