I have.  Once you remove the additional boot time, the somewhat slow to 
load GUI install apps, and so on, and if you consider how much faster 
you can go with a keyboard...

We did a race on identical equipment (Dual core and 2 gig of ram) and 
the alt install was rebooted and logged in before the live cd was at reboot.
