Adrianna has a great point.
http://status.net/ is an Open source microblogging application, it
publishes RSS feeds of your posts, your end users can use feed readers
to catch up on the latest posts. Thunderbird has feed capability.
Any such platform would work, really, it's the feed publishing part that
you are after. XML based, they pass through firewalls.
Coding support for RSS / Atom feeds is easy enough, if you want to make
a custom viewer tailored for your needs.
Take the Python RSS libraries for instance, you can read, and create,
feeds with these: http://wiki.python.org/moin/RssLibraries
