You guys would be pleased to know that this has been fixed in 12.04:
you now have to put pressure on the left side before it pops up i.e. going
slowly to the left does not reveal it, so you need to get some momentum on
the mouse pointer and go left to trigger it.
Initially it confused me a bit but now that I'm used to it, it is much
better.

Also, I think by default it does not hide anymore as well.
