Hi Jan,
That's interesting, because I had a similar type of issue. I have a
pretty big library of wallpapers ~1200 and when I first attempted to
use the Pictures Folders option it would load a majority of them. When
you close the app and then re-open it only remembers a max of 47 images
in my case.
So I’m thinking that it could actually be a bug and should be reported.
I've never worried about it because I've always just used a wallpaper
rotating script or application to change my backgrounds for me. Perhaps
try something like Wallch to handle your backgrounds.
I still wonder why the GNOME developers haven't even put support for
rotating backgrounds yet.
