Thanks Lee, I have backed up and gone for a fresh install of 12.10 but 
merely because I do not have a 12.04 CD.

The first time, I went for a re-install keeping my files  and then my 
mouse cursor froze so I again did a fresh install, this time deleting 
everything.

The first thing that happened after the second fresh install (before I 
even touched the system) was a message that Compiz had closed unexpectedly.

My impression is that Quantal comes with chronic bugs that need sorting 
out.
