[ubuntu-za] Grsync owner and permissions fail

Hallo all ,

I would just like to know if someone knows why grsync doesn't preserve 
file owner and permissions correctly ?
I formatted a usb stick to ext4 because I specifically want permissions 
preserved in my backups. I then made
sure that I selected the "preserve owner , preserve permissions" 
options. But when I check in the backups this is not
preserved. All folders and files the owner is made my id that ran the 
backup.

So I quickly fixed it by making a small cli script running rsync and 
that works perfectly. So problem is solved but
I would still be interested to know why grsync can't do it , even though 
the options are there and selected.
And if there is a known fix ?
