Hi Tom,

Thanks for that hint.  I looked around those log files (discovered 
zgrep) and it seems that it was the configuration done by an update on 6 
March (in /var/log/apt/history.log) involving chromium, 
flash-plugin-installer etc that created a lot of activity in the 
/var/log/alternatives.log file at the same time.  Cannot quite make 
sense of it but I am assuming that it ended up pointing to the 
previously installed gnash (which from other apt logs I see was 
installed on 21/10/2011 with no package updates since then) instead of 
flash.

Thanks for helping me get to the bottom of that and learning something new.
