Yeah I've read that, still it might be congestion on the lines?
If there are a pattern...just maybe you hit the server when every body 
are sending some spam mails?
Therefore the suggestion to test the lines, if the server gives a good 
response TB should not hang on send. it might be as small a problem as 
your distro trying to pull updates while you are sending the mail, also 
check the output of "top" and "system monitor" if TB are working it 
should show.

Our office server had a problem with smtp because I did not had the 
hostnames setup correctly... took most of a minute before the mail got 
delivered to the server,  during witch TB apeared to hang.
