I am looking at System 76.
The laptops are great, but priced in Dollar terms. In Rand terms
though they are high-end laptops with no "budget" involved.
You can surely getting one shipped here. But without a credit card
it is a major hassle to get that arranged. And I mean, I will have
to take a day and go to either Welkom or Vanderbijlpark since no bank
in the little Freestate town where I stay can handle anything to do
with foreign exchange - and that is only for starters.
Sigh. Why could it not just be easy? Laptops from most major
manufacturers are available in the EU with Ubuntu preconfigured since
the EU closely monitors Microsofts monopolistic practices. But in
most of the English speaking world, Microsoft has the OEM arrangement
with manufacturers sewn up tightly where it is practically impossible
to purchase a brand-name PC without Windows pre-installed.
This is unfair and to me represents bullying and robbery. This is
also contrary to the Consumer Protection Act in South Africa where
the purchase of one product based on the conditional purchase of
another product is illegal. The Linux community should get involved
in some activism and do something about it.
I certainly plan to carry on at this, firstly by making a list of the
brands and retailers that insist on selling Windows bundled with
laptops; by stirring up activism in this regard; and by investigating
laying a complaint to whatever body deals with the implementation of
the Consumer Protection Act in South-Africa.
Let's fair be fair...
Thanks
