Hi Guys
I'm an embedded systems guy so I play a lot with Ubuntu on odd
hardware. As a result I often have strange problems to solve. However,
I just came across one that totally baffles me.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu Server Edition on this device:
iEi Wafer-PV-D5252
<http://usa.ieiworld.com/product_groups/industrial/content.aspx?gid=00001000010000000001&id=0A280644617578676713&cid=09050665109937740140#.UQf1l9fFtwo>
It's a very modern device with a dual-core Atom processor, nothing
really strange about it. I've installed a 2GB RAM DIMM and a 32GB
CompactFlash disk as the harddrive.
The first oddity is that it refuses to boot anything 12.04! I've tried
two methods, external CDROM and USB. With 10.04 it works.
Now, when I install any version of 10.04 (server, lubuntu, etc.) the
installation completes without any issues. In this my goal is Server
Edition. However, when I boot the device it goes into a crawl. It
takes nearly 4 minutes to get a login prompt. Once you've entered the
login details it takes over a minute to complete. In fact it takes
about 20 seconds before it even shows the normal login welcome info.
And so it goes.
When I use the CF card in another devices (in this case a uIBX-200-VX800
<http://www.ieiworld.com/product_groups/industrial/content.aspx?keyword=uibx-200-vx800&gid=09049552811981014603&cid=08141362138429024070&id=09083406876072178395#.UQf33NfFtwo>,
which is a lot harder to work with because it uses a non-standard
processor and chipset), the CF card boots normally. Same thing when I
install Ubuntu on the uIBX-200-VX800 and move the CF card to the
Wafer-PV-D5252, it boots normally.
My guess is that Ubuntu installs the wrong driver for something during
the installation on the Wafer. Any hints on how to find the problem?
Regards
Charl
