Yes, I totally agree,

I've been learning how to use owncloud recently. I use ddclient to
manage my dynamic IP address and run owncloud and other services on a
low powered NetBoot.

It is a bit of a challenge, easy for tekkies like us, but out of reach
to most people. I'm hoping the FreedomBox becomes available soon to
provide the advantages of federated services like owncloud over the
more monopolistic model of "all your data belong to us" in the client
server model.

I've even been thinking of services that take advantage of the client/
server model without the privacy pitfalls. For example, using a
service like Dropbox or UbuntuOne, but being able to encrypt
everything client side. So they have your data, but can't read it.

But alas, I've never been able to get anyone to care about these issues.

Regards
Grant
