You cannot upgrade a 32bit install to 64bit, but I understand from below
that this is not a problem since it is a fresh install.

Most of the working files that are stored in /home/ by the programs you
use/install will be replaced during the install process.
You do not need to format your separate drive for /home, indeed you should
not if you want to keep your data.
There SHOULD be no problems with going to 64bit, but SHOULD is a best
estimate based on user reports.
I have exclusively used 64bit Ubuntu (and other distros) and have had very
few problems.
Good luck, and make double sure of those backups when you choose to move
over!
